The most useful way to evaluate and interpret trends in media portrayals studied in the coding project is through theory in communication, psychology, and other related fields, e.g., Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory of Mass Communication on modeling and learning; Gerbner’s Cultivation Theory on the impact of media violence; Phillips’ Media Contagion Theory on the spread of suicide.
