Definition of Illegal Substances

The mention of anything related to illicit drugs, prescription drugs, or nonspecific substances, including slang (buds, crack, speed, blow, dime bag, etc), paraphernalia (joint, needles, etc) as well as direct or implied drug use. Medical use is not coded (i.e. “The doc gave me these for my moods”) but recreational use is recorded.

Drug Scale:

  • 1 = General reference, observation, or figurative speech about drugs and/or drug paraphernalia
    You think you’re gonna take her away / with your money and your cocaine
    Legalize it – don’t criticize it / Legalize it and I will advertise it
    Lucy in the sky with diamonds
  • 2 = Drug use is implied
    Ya’ll got cocaine eyes / Yeah, you got speed-freak jive
    Purple haze all in my brain / Lately things just don’t seem the same
    So lets get to the point, lets roll another joint
  • 3 = Drug use is described
    Light it up and take a puff, pass it to me now 
    And the waitress is practicing politics / As the businessmen slowly get stoned/
    Cause it makes me feel like I’m a man / when I put a spike into my vein / 
           and I’ll tell ya, things aren’t quite the same

Type of Drugs Portrayed

Recorded type of drug mentioned, including paraphernalia.

  1. Marijuana (MaryJane, J, blunt, grass, chronic, dro, indo, ounce, sensimilla, gange, dope, doobie, buds, hydroponic)
  2. Cocaine (coke, crack, blow, snow, rock, toot, rush, yayo, candy)
  3. Hallucinogens (trip, cubes, mush, shroom, tabs, doses, boomers, caps)
  4. Heroin (smack, junk, H, horse, dragon, china white)
  5. Ecstasy (E, X, molly, rolls, beans)
  6. Others (speed, meth, crank, ice, reds, blues, dust, Tylenol 3, vicodin, perkies, oxy, special K, roofies, ludes, salvia)

Overdose or Drug-related Death

A character takes too many / too much of drugs, resulting in immediate physical harm (seizures, passing out) which may require medical attention or leads to injury or death.
